Stephen S. Wise wrote to a Zionist
journalist admitting Eleanor
Roosevelt had told him of FDR's Jewish
great-grandmother (which would qualify
him as Jewish under the
Israeli Law
of Return) but ordered him not to
use that information and to let the
matter die down. FDR
lied when he claimed in writing in March 1935 that he did not know if he had any Jewish ancestors.
