Heart patient dies after checkpoint incident

A Palestinian woman from a village near Jenin died yesterday after the
taxi taking her to the hospital was held up four hours at an army
checkpoint.
In another incident near the Karni checkpoint, Palestinians claim a
young man died of gunshot wounds - the Israel Defense Forces deny any
shooting in the area.
The 50-year-old woman was being taken by cab to a hospital in Jenin.
Palestinians say she died because the IDF detained the taxi for four
hours, but the army spokesman's office had a different version of
events.
It said Palestinians had vandalized a new electric gate installed at
the checkpoint so it opened only partially, and the taxi driver
refused to go through. He looked for another route into Jenin but had
to return, and another vehicle was summoned from the Jenin side. The
spokesman said the soldiers at the checkpoint helped transfer the
woman between the vehicles, but she died soon after.
The IDF is considering easing the closure on Jenin, following such the
pattern in four other cities this week. The closure on Ramallah
continues, but cars are allowed through two roadblocks at the city's
northern and southern ends.
Military sources say there is still information about a plan by
terrorists to smuggle a bomb into Jerusalem, despite the arrest by the
Shin Bet security services of members of the cell involved.
IDF sources say Palestinians continue reporting a total siege on all
West Bank towns, ignoring the lifting of the closure on half of the
cities. Military sources says this is a clear effort to win
Palestinian support for a struggle against the closures. Students have
joined in after the havoc wreaked by the closure on studies at Beir
Zeit University. General strike days have been nominated.
The IDF believes Palestinians will step up these activities before
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's visit to the United States and the Arab
summit later this month.
There were few shootings in the territories yesterday. The IDF denied
a Palestinian claim that soldiers shot and killed a young Gaza Strip
man near the Karni junction.
Civil Administration employees yesterday rescued a 20-year-old Holon
resident from the village of Anata, located in Area B (under
Palestinian administrative rule) near Jerusalem.
She went there with a 17-year-old Palestinian youth who had been
staying illegally in the Tel Aviv area. Angry Palestinians gathered
near his house and there were fears for her safety.
Palestinian Authority officials notified the Civil Administration,
whose officials removed her from the village and handed her to the
police in Israel for a brief interrogation.
