Sharon: Settlements Help Peace

Settlements actually contribute to peace, Foreign
Minister Ariel Sharon told foreign ambassadors to
Israel yesterday.
Sharon was referring to remarks made earlier this
week by U.S. Special Middle East Envoy Dennis
Ross, who said that settlement activity in the
West Bank "was very destructive to the pursuit of
peace."
The foreign minister welcomed the diplomats at
the King David Hotel in Jerusalem, a five-minute
walk from East Jerusalem. "I would like to
welcome you to Jerusalem, the capital of the
Jewish people for the last 3,000 years and the
capital of Israel for the last 50 years," he told
the diplomats.
Sharon reiterated Israel's position on the status
of Jerusalem and emphasized that the city would
never be divided and would remain under Israeli
sovereignty.
"Resolution 181, which speaks about Jerusalem not
being part of Israel, is null and void and...we
have a very wide national consensus about this
issue," the foreign minister said.
However, Sharon did not demand that the
ambassadors refrain from meeting with
Palestinians at the Orient House in his remarks.
Sharon blamed the Palestinians for the freeze in
the implementation of the Wye agreement, charging
that the Palestinian Authority was apparently
waiting for the Israeli elections and was buying
time in the hope that it would get a better deal
if the government changed.
Referring to the issue of Lebanon, Sharon said
Israel had no intention of remaining in Lebanon,
and that the government had already adopted U.N.
Resolution 425, but would not withdraw from
Lebanon without security arrangements that would
ensure the security of Israel's northern border.
