Israel asks U.S. to freeze Mitchell Committee

On the eve of Secretary of State Colin Powell's visit to the region,
Israel has asked the U.S. to stop the activities of the Mitchell
Committee which was set up to investigate the causes of the violence
in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Outgoing Prime Minister Ehud Barak
sent a letter to Powell on Wednesday, stating that the existence of
the committee was not compatible with the reality of ongoing
Palestinian violence.
Barak noted that the committee was set up at the Sharm al Sheikh
ceasefire summit in October last year, as part of a package of
measures that included a cessation of violence and incitement, renewed
security cooperation, and a renewal of the negotiation process. He
added that the Palestinians have continued with the violence and
incitement, that there is no cooperation between Israeli and
Palestinian security forces and that a renewal of negotiations looks
unlikely.
"These changes place raise big question marks regarding the ability of
the committee to successfully fulfil its function, and so our
governments need to consult on this issue," he wrote.
Barak's letter was coordinated with the advisors of Prime
Minister-elect Ariel Sharon . It reflects the view of the Israeli
liaison to the Mitchell committee, deputy director-general of the
defense ministry Moshe Kochanovsky, who has been proposing that
attempts be made to freeze the work of the committee.
Kochanovsky stated that Israel would not gain any benefit from the
committee's investigations, which were meant to determine the causes
of the Intifada in its early stages, and has turned into the last
remnant of the Sharm understandings, which were not fulfilled by the
Palestinians.
Israel froze its cooperation with the Mitchell Committee last month,
after the committee's technical team toured the Temple Mount without
first coordinating the visit with Jerusalem.
