Human rights group brings water to a dry West Bank town

About 150 activists from B'Tselem and other human rights groups
yesterday brought water to a West Bank town as a protest against
Israel's water distribution policy, which has created a severe water
shortage in Palestinian areas.
The group brought 600 liters of water in bottles and another 15,000 liters
in three containers to the town of Yatta, south of Hebron.
During the summer months the town of 47,000 is divided into 14 districts,
each of which gets running water for two or three days - and then gets
no water for the next 45 days. An average of 30 liters of water a day is
allocated to Yatta's residents in the summer, as compared with an
average of 70 liters a day in the Palestinian areas and 270 liters in Israel.
To cope with the dire shortage, 25 trucks and 150 tractors bring
containers of water to Yatta, which the residents buy, as elsewhere in the
West Bank. Some of the water, including the water purchased yesterday
by B'Tselem, is from the settlement of Kiryat Arba.
According to Fadel Kawash, the deputy director-general of the
Palestinian Water Authority, Yatta gets its water from a small well and
from the main pipeline of Israel's Mekorot water utility. However, in
Yatta, as in other Palestinian areas, Mekorot reduces the water supply in
the summer, which causes the shortage.
Among those who took part in yesterday's protest were MK Mohammed
Barakeh (Hadash), entertainer Avri Gilad, the singer Amal Murkus and
the rabbi of the settlement of Tekoah, Menachem Fruman. One of the
posters carried by the group was, "While they're swimming in Tekoah
they're going dry in Yatta."
A B'Tselem report on the water problem accused Mekorot of introducing
a discriminatory summer policy, increasing the water supply to the
settlers but reducing it to the Palestinians.
